Bulldogs run past Mustangs, 42-6 BY: MARCUS LOMTONG/FAIRFIELD DAILY REPUBLIC
FAIRFIELD -   The Rodriguez High football team did not go down without a fight at Coach Ed Hopkins Memorial Stadium, Friday, as it scored its only touchdown with four minutes left in the game, falling 42-6 in  Monticello Empire League play to four-time champion Vacaville. The win, combined with Wood’s 24-6 loss to Vintage, clinched for the Bulldogs at least a tie for their fifth straight MEL title. Mustangs coach Berwyn Hutcherson described the Bulldogs as a “power house,” and added “we weren’t able to match up with the girth and strength of this team.” Vacaville (6-3, 4-0 MEL) opened the game by recovering and onside kick, and in 45 seconds scored on a 9-yard Demetrius Nunez run. On the Bulldogs’ next possession, they took only two plays and 30 seconds to score as quarterback Chad Hekking threw a 10-yard pass to a diving Jeramy Sweany in the end-zone. The ensuing possession for the Mustangs (1-8, 0-4 MEL) was a 55-yard, 16-play drive that led to a turnover on downs at Vacaville’s 22 yard-line, opting to pass instead of going for a field goal. “My main plan was to stay consistent on offense,” Hutcherson said. “Just convert our third downs, and we weren’t able to do that.” Indeed, Rodriguez had six possessions which lasted four plays or less. On the next Bulldog possession, it took only one minute for them to march 78 yards and score. Hekking threw a 36-yard touchdown to a wide open Tanner Donaldson. Hekking ended the night with two touchdowns on 102 yards passing, with one interception on a tipped ball, caught by Rodriguez’s Nash Jontoc. Vacaville scored three more rushing touchdowns, with Nunez and Daniel Mewborn each running in a 1-yarder, and Wyatt Faulkner going over from 5 yards out. The Bulldogs had 12 different players run the ball, finishing with 249 yards rushing. The Mustangs had a few shining moments on defense with the interception by Jontoc, and a caused fumble by Ryan Ballard, but it took the offense 44 minutes to shine. Rodriguez finally scored on a 13-play drive which ended with a 1-yard scoring run by D’Andre Scott.
