Vacaville High School football team crushes Vintage on homecoming night

VACAVILLE - The red zone offense never had a chance. Other than that, homecoming night was
a rousing success for Vacaville High School's football team.
The Bulldogs scored on seven plays that averaged 50 yards in length during a 49-13 pasting of
Vintage on Friday night at Tom Zunino Stadium.
After a slow start, the Bulldogs scored on five of their last six possessions of the first half to
snap a three-game losing streak and open the Monticello Empire League season in style.
"We definitely had a couple of big ones tonight," Vacaville head coach Mike Papadopoulos.
"We had a good, solid week of practice, good dialogue between the players and coaches.
When that happens, the outcome kind of works itself out."
Both Vacaville and Vintage sputtered at the outset, but the Bulldogs finally got untracked
after an interception by Damonte Moore gave them a short field.
Two plays later, David Mewborn burst through the right side for the first of the big plays,
a 44-yard scoring run that gave Vacaville the lead for good.
Moore added a 39-yard run on the next series.
Vintage responded with a score of its own, but Vacaville never let the Crushers grab the
momentum. Kane Cunningham returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to push the lead back
to 14 points, and game never was close again.
Vacaville punted one more time, but Moore later turned a screen pass from Chad Hekking
into an 83-yard score as the contest became a rout.
"All I saw was a lot of offensive linemen blocking everyone in front of me," Moore said.
"They did their job, and I just did mine."
Hekking also had a 40-yard scoring toss to David Mewborn, and a 29-yard TD pass to
Tanner Donaldson. Hekking completed 6 of 9 attempts for 184 yards, an average of 31 yards
per completion and 20 yards per attempt.
"We had a good passing day with Chad, and I think that kind of opened the running game
up," Papadopoulos added.
The Bulldogs rolled up 322 yards of offense in the first half alone, a figure even more
impressive considering Vacaville punted twice and fumbled on its first three possessions.
Daniel Mewborn had a 27-yard scoring run.
All told, 13 Vacaville backs combined to rush for 231 yards.
Vintage fell to 2-4 overall, while Vacaville evened its overall mark at 3-3.
